Guy got busted sharing a Movie file using Grokster / Fastrack! A email from "Grokster.com" |
"The Grokster Team" Wrote to some "guy"...
We are writing you directly asking you to consider why you are hosting this file on your website. We have looked at some of the things you are commenting on at your website and find that perhaps you are not aware of the consequences to others of what you are doing.
First, Grokster and its employees have invested enormous amounts of time and capital into Grokster. It costs a small fortune every month to develop, maintain, support and server Grokster, not to mention that we are paying the enormous costs of fighting the RIAA amd MPAA lawsuits so that you can continue using programs like Grokster. It would seem fair that Grokster's employees should be able to feed themselves and their families through these efforts. The only revenue sources that Grokster has revolve around the "hacks" being made to Grokster. We note that all the websites that seem to be used to promote the "hacked" version of Grokster (including Zeropaid, Slyck, and UniteTheCows) all have banner ads and/or popup ads on their websites, yet we do not see anyone hacking these to remove their sources of income. Has it occurred to you that if it were not for these revenue sources that almost all P2P programs would not exist today?
Second of all, we do not force any spyware or extra programs upon our users. All of the extra programs are presented during the install and the user decides whether they want them or not. Most users do not elect to take some or all of these programs. Some users find some of the programs such as the antivirus one to be quite useful. Since we allow each user to decide about these things, why shouldn't you? Why do you know better than each of our users?
Third, Cydoor is included as our ad serving software. Cydoor is adware and not spyware, despite certain people's claims otherwise. And again, this is disclosed to our potential users right up front and is not hidden away. If a user elects not to receive it, they may do so and we quite happily encourage them to use one of the many other P2P programs out there. Again, this is a decision that each of our users can make, so why shouldn't you let them? Again, why do you know better than each individual Grokster user? Please review this info about Cydoor here:

Also, the website that sets the standards for defining adware vs spyware, at http://www.cexx.org/cydoor.htm says:
"The current version appears to respect the user's privacy and informed consent. Therefore, we consider this version most accurately categorized as "Adware". Older versions could more accurately be considered "Spyware". "
Grokster, Kazaa and Morpheus are the ones currently on the front lines in the legal battle with the RIAA and the MPAA. It would seem that we were your friend and not your enemy. We ask that you reconsider the consequences to Grokster and the file sharing community in general of your actions.

I'm not sure how to even comment on that. What exactly are you telling me? Skip the bullshit please, and just come out with it. You want me to take down this file or what? I put your email on here because I did say I'm willing to hear you and anyother company out. I still hold to that. I heard you. Funny, why not have a reply address don't even want to talk about it I guess. I'm shocked, you didn't even attemp to bribe me.(lol)
I don't know if that email was ment to scare me or just inform me. The part being that it isn't spyware anymore, that's up for debate, simple fact is, WE DON'T TRUST IT! and no we won't just use another client. When the people demanded that we have the right to share files, to get music from each other, and the RIAA make a big fuss, we didn't just say, oh fine then RIAA be like that, we just won't listen to music anymore. Hell no, we continued sharing files. The people have spoken then, and there speaking again now. This time there taking to you and other clients like you. At first you was on your side, but simply to explote the situation. Hoping to make some bucks. At first we let you, that was the price, but soon you got greedy and went over board. So this is the result. Watch what you say when you tell us to go someware else, you might find we will and leave you in the dust. You might just become another Napster doomed to bankrupsy but this time, it will be for not heading the words of the people.
I said before the budling with optional applications is 100% fine with me. Cydoor, I will say again, GET RID OF IT (I and thousands of other people do not trust it nor like it). Put a simple small add banner in the program no pop ups (there so damn annoying). If Grokster/iMesh/Kazaa didn't have Cydoor or a ton of pop ups, then we wouldnt be having these "hacked" versions. Xolox has a ad banner, and yet it's based on the gnutella and there is clear alternatives to Xolox, and Yet even though they have ad's and they even have that iFilm button, no one is making "Hacked" version of that client.
I'm I really a big major threat to you? Little me, this little homepage of mine. You (I am assuming, I do not have proof that it is really you) write me an email, like if your some trust worthy company yet the very second Dr. Damn bought a new domain, you bought his old one, explain and justify that?
I am more then willing to talk about this further, but right now, this is a good class assignment for me, and changing this site around comming up with a new theme for it, something not clean grokster hosting related and risk losing my A, well I just don't know. The class and books for the class, cost me a bundle.
I know this site won't last, I never expected it too, it wasn't entended too. However I am looking into purchasing my own domain, on a russion or german or host that allows warez and whatever. Would you still attemp to take down my site then? Ok so I found out that for some reason Tripod won't let me host the grokster file, I don't know how they knew but they did. I have other free sites that are currently hosting it, plus changing the name of the file abit helped.
Feel free to contact me again "Grokster Team" this time, give a address as to were I can reply rather then me resorting to putting your email's online. I'm still interested in what you have to "tell" me, and I'm interested in knowing my "options"... :)

This is a interesting P2P Client, I no longer trust it myself. Alot of reports have been made about the misuse of power Grokster.com has, as well as users getting in trouble for sharing files. Seems like grokster (and all Fastrack for that matter) don't care about your privacy.

Anwser: Your right, let's let the user (me, being only I am allowed to download these files) decide for himself.
Also to be fair, for those that have not read Grokster's FAQ, here is a sample
pertaining to Cydoor.

And let us state that Cydoor is currently mislabeled as spyware. In the distant past (Inet time), Cydoor did deliver spyware, so they got that reputation. They have cleaned up their act and now we believe they are mistakenly still classed as spyware, when they truly are not. The only thing that Cydoor does in addition to what Double Click/ Advertising.com/Etc., is that it downloads a batch of ads at once and stores them on your computer until they are all shown and then it gets another batch. It does not collect any more info from your computer than when you are browsing and are shown ads on all the websites that you visit. The well-known spyware watchdog site, "Counterexploitation", which actively monitors and tests spyware, has this to say about Cydoor: "Cydoor has cleaned up its act considerably since previous versions of its software. Previous versions left it up to the host application's vendor to disclose (or not) that Cydoor ad components were being installed, leading to a finger-pointing loop in cases where the software was not disclosed. Additionally, previous versions used a GUID to track individual users across multiple sessions. This has been removed from the current version, as verified by our tests and information on the Cydoor website. Cydoor's components now come with an uninstall feature that was not present in earlier versions." And they conclude: "The current version appears to respect the user's privacy and informed consent. Therefore, we consider this version most accurately categorized as "Adware". Older versions could more accurately be considered "Spyware"." Even the people that define what is spyware and what is not, do not call it spyware, but adware. ...author's comment,

their pc. I still hold fast to my belief, I don't trust Cydoor for one bit. It had a bad
reputation from the start, one website's claim is not proof to me. Web site's all the
time will write an article based on what a "dontation giver" claims. Plus it's pop ups
piss me off it creates way to much, and I just don't like it.

This is the new version modeled on the Open Source version of MorpheusX, it's actually much better being this one is updated, has bug fixes and much more. This site didn't have a banner and the features are really close to the original and I'm to lazy to create a new table j just add a few extra features.

This is a good website designed for people with a Fast Track client Originaly just a list of some common movies on the Fast Track Network, but has now evolved to a site that offers Sig2Dat links for alot of the movies postings. I can't waite till more sites come out with stuff like this, not just movies but all sorts of files (e.g. games, software, etc.) I strongly belive Sig2Dat is a great tool, along side with MorpheusX which did help improve my download speeds. Sig2Dat helps assuring that the files we download are the correct ones. So hopefully creating a drastic reduce in "bullshit" files.
Alot of people seem to like this site, and I was asked to link to it. So for those this might be of use here it is. It's basically a forum dedicated for Fastrack users, you will find alot of Sig2Dat quicklinks if you look around. So it is worth a look. Thank SA_Dave for requesting this link.
